Spindle-driving apparatus. - A driving-device for spinning and like spindles, incorporating friction and positive transmission means so arranged that at starting the friction transmission means only is effective, and comprising a driving wharl C and a driven clutch element F adapted to be locked positively on the attainment of a given speed by balls or rollers J, is characterized in that the member F is formed with pockets or slots J<1> having faces J<2> inclined to the axis of rotation, into which the balls J climb under centrifugal action to engage driving-dogs D. The wharl C is formed with a bevelled edge K, which forces the balls J inwards to stop the drive when the member F is slid axially to disengage the friction faces G, H.
