Coupling oscillating and radiating circuit; keying systems; directive signalling. - Transmitting aerials for short-wave radiation are directly connected to the exciting oscillatory circuit at a point insulated from earth and at which a node of voltage exists. As shown in the Figure, standing waves are set up on parallel wires w connected to the grid and plate of a valve V.. The plate wire may include a capacity C and the grid circuit includes a ,coil c. The aerial A is connected at a voltage node. A directive system may be obtained by connecting a number of aerials to separate voltage nodes spaced along the wire w. Oscillations are produced in the aerial. only when its length is equal to a, quarter wave-length or to an odd multiple thereof. Signalling may therefore be effected by changing the effective length of the aerial by a key, switch &c. K, connecting up an extension A'.
