Abstract

581,724. Directive radio signalling. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and WILLOUGHBY, E. O. May 2, 1941, No. 5717. [Class 40 (v)] In an overlapping- beam or other directional system in which a horn 1 is associated with an antenna A, Z, B forming part of a tuned loop circuit in which standing waves are set up, the position of maximum current in the antenna is varied by alternately earthing the points D1, D2, thereby altering the direction of the principal radiation lobe. The antenna includes a non-radiating reactance Z, such as a cod or folded conductor, so that the currents in the parts A1, A2 are in phase. The points D1, D2 are so chosen that the impedance of transmission line T is matched to the radiation resistance of the antenna system as seen along paths CA and CB. The loop circuit may be tuned at L in the usual way. The outer conductor of the transmission line is connected to the horn. The arrangement may be used for transmitting or receiving waves polarized in the plane of the paper.
