Abstract
256,743. Saunders, S. E. June 15, 1925. Planes, arrangement and construction of. -The wings of an aeorplane are hinged about a common axis so that they can fold towards each other into line with the fuselage, provision being made for moving the wings out of their common level, as they fold, into positions one above the other. In the case of a biplane, the upper wings fold above and the lower wings below the fuselage, the interplane struts being hinged to one plane of each pair. The two lower wings b, c of a biplane are secured to rings e, f surrounding a turret d secured to the fuselage, the engaging edges g, h of the rings being inclined to ensure that the wing 'b is raised out of the plane of the wing c as the wings are folded. The upper edge of the ring e and the lower edge of a sleeve w surrounding the turret dare curved as shown at e<1> so as to engage one another in both the upper and lower positions of :the ring e. Toothed quadrants k, v engaged by pinions l, u are provided on the rings f, e, the quadrant v being curved to permit therising movement of the ring e. The pinions l, u are turned by chain gearing from a hand-wheel n. Spring-pressed locking-bolts x in the turret d, operated by Bowden cables from a lever z, lock the rings e, f in their two positions. According to the Provisional Specification, the wings .may be of metal or of sewn plywood such as that known under the Trade Mark " Consuta.''
