Abstract

554,084. Aeroplanes. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and CHAPLIN, H. E. Feb. 2, 1942, No. 1356. [Class 4] A twin engined aeroplane with folding wings has portions of the engine nacelles hingedly mounted on the stub portions of the wings so that they can be swung towards the fuselage to reduce the overall width across the propeller tips. The displaceable portions e of the nacelles are pivoted about their inboard edges g and interlocking means may be provided to prevent movement of the portions e until the propellers are moved into a position where two of their three blades will straddle the fuselage, or, where the blades can overlap the forward end of the fuselage, until the innermost blades are horizontal. Alternatively the propellers may be moved to the required position as the nacelle begins to turn. The wings are foldable about axes d and may be interconnected by lever and linkwork or by hydraulic means to cause the nacelles to move simultaneously with the wings. Fig. 3 shows diagrammatically the interconnection of the locking means for securing both the wings and nacelle sections in position. Pairs of bolts n for locking the wing to the stub wing are linked to a rocking lever p and pairs of bolts v for locking the nacelle sections are linked to a similar lever t, the two levers p, t being connected together by a link s so that they can be moved simultaneously by a lever r on the shaft of the lever p.
