Abstract

255,310. Risden, C. W. Dec. 17, 1925. Closure members, compound.-A rotary valve, particularly for controlling inlet and exhaust of internal-combustion engines, comprises a pair of discs 36, 41 connected together by a rectangular casing 42, Fig. 4, which forms an inlet chamber connected at 30 to the carburettor and formed with ports 43, 44 in the disc 36 and ports 45, 46 in the disc 41. The discs are further each provided with a pair of exhaust ports 52, 53 separated by partitions 49 which extend between the discs and form a cylindrical-like closure in the casing at 26. The valve rotates within a casing 21, 22 formed with ports 54, 56 co-operating with the disc ports, the casing being open to the atmosphere at its upper part from 63 to 64, Fig. 4. Exhaust takes place through a conduit 25, and the partitions 49 serve as vanes to introduce air from the atmosphere to scavenge the exhaust spaces. Between the disc 36 and the side wall 21 of the valve casing is arranged a plate 37 formed with a port 55 coinciding with the port 56 and surrounded by packing-rings 57. The plate 37 is held against rotation and pressed inwards by a series of pins 38 acted on by springs 39. The ports 44, 43 and 55 are larger than the ports 54, 56, 45 and 46, so that the valve is drawn towards the right during the suction stroke, and is pressed in the same direction during the compression stroke.
