Abstract

Projectile fuzes.- A direct-action striker C<1> or other member of a fuze is locked at safe by balls D situated between a cylindrical wall e and a conical face c, and preferably held in place by a spring G. The striker thus locked can be released by an inward pressure thereon only when accompanied by a rotation of the striker, for example by wind-vanes F. The balls then travel in a helicoidal path until they escape into an enlarged recess E<1>. The striker is then free to be driven against the percussion cap B on impact, but may be held until then by a shear-wire H. This device may be made to act as a time fuze, the striker being thrust by a spring against the percussion cap when the balls escape from the conical clutch. The functions of the striker and percussion cap carrier may be reversed, and various other modifications of detail may be made. A similar ball clutch may be used to release a safety cover from a fuze. In some modifications, the direct-action striker is provided with a safety collar adapted to be released before or automatically on discharge, and the percussion cap is cushioned by a spring as an additional safety, so that firing cannot take place by the approach of the striker against the cap unless the cap is simultaneously subject to momentum. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also describes a modification in which the ball clutch is replaced by a screw- and-nut device. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
