Abstract
255,027. Balleydier, E. July 7, 1925, [Convention date]. Lathes.-In a copying-lathe for reproducing profiled articles such as wheel spokes, pick-handles &c. the work piece 25 and templet 24 are rotated about parallel axes in a swinging frame 9 which is controlled by the template and is traversed to carry the work past a rotary cutter 3. The cutter is mounted in a fixed bracket 2 and comprises a number of shell-shaped cutters 5 arranged round a disc 3 on a ball-bearing spindle driven by a pulley 4. The screw 6 driven by fast-and-loose pulleys 19, 20. is provided with bearings 7 for the swinging frame 9, and half nuts 8 are secured to one of these bearings. The work and templet are carried between fixed centres 13 and movable centres 12 mounted respectively in fast and loose headstocks guided on the frame 9, and rotation of the work and templet is effected from a sprocket 14 splined to the spindle 6 through chain gearing 15 and spur gearing 16. In operation, the halfnuts are closed and the rotating work is moved past the cutter, the profile being determined by the engagement of the templet with a fixed guide 18. At the end of the operation an adjustable stop ring 17 on the screw 6 engages a bar 23 to disengage the half nuts and arrest the longitudinal traverse. By varying the shape of the guide 18, the templet may either be copied accurately or a modified profile may be reproduced on the work.
