Abstract
953,401. Gear finishing machines. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. Sept. 5, 1961 [Oct. 31, 1960; Dec. 27, 1960], No. 31851/61. Headings B3B and B3K. A gear finishing machine comprises a rotary gear like tool, a work gear slide mounted on support means for rapid and slow traverse in a plane parallel to the work and tool axes. The machine comprises a main slide 20, Fig. 1, movable on ways 12, a crowning table 22 pivoted at 24, a power head stock 28, a tail stock 26, and a tool head 32 adjustable about a vertical axis and carried by a vertically adjustable slide 30. A feed screw 48, Fig. 6, is connected to a pistonrod 44, passes through a nut 50 on slide 20 and is rotatably connected to a slide 52 which is movable on ways 12. Rapid traverse of slide 20 is produced by actuating piston-rod 44, and slow traverse during the finishing operation is produced by rotation of screw 48. Slide 52 is locked during the finishing operation by a hook mechanism 54, Figs. 6, 9, the hook 56 being pivoted in a bracket 66 fixed to base 10 and a latch 74 fixed to slide 52 is held by the hook. Feed screw 48 is rotated by a reversible motor 80, Fig. 5, which drives sleeves 82, 86, gears 90, 92, Figs. 10, 11, worm and wheel 96, 98 and gears 102, 104, 106. Crowning table 22 is rocked by an adjustable cam 116, Fig. 6, having a slot 114, as the table is traversed, and the table can be fixed to produce tapered gears by worm-adjusted pins 126. The head stock drive comprises a reversible motor 160, sheaves 162, 166, Fig. 2A, gears 170, 174, 176, 178, 180, 184. Tool slide 30, Figs. 16, 17, is clamped to ways 200 by fluid pressure cylinders 202 which rotate arms 212, into which screwed shafts are drawn, thus moving clamps 214 to clamp the slide and the slide is counter-balanced by weights 226, Fig. 3, suspended by chains or cables 228 passing over pulleys 230, 232. Vertical movement of slide 30 is by a feed-screw 240, Fig. 23, rotated manually, or by a motor, the ultimate drive to the screw being through a worm and wheel 246, 244. A split nut 262, 264, Fig. 18, carried by slide 30, co-operates with screw 240 to feed the slide, and for manual operation a hand wheel 34, Fig. 15, rotates a shaft 276, connected to a sprocket 256, Figs. 18, 23, by a chain 282, a clutch 284, Fig. 15, being provided for disconnecting the manual drive when using the power drive. The rapid traverse power drive for spindle 258, Fig. 23, is through a motor 290, Figs. 19, 23, sheaves 292, 296, a worm and wheel 300, 302, electromagnetic clutch 308, 310, shaft 307 and gears 316, 318 and slow traverse is through worm and wheel 300, 302, gears 306, 330, electromagnetic clutch 331, 332, shaft 326, and gears 324, 318. Switches 344, 346, Fig. 19, are actuated by dogs 314, 318, on a graduated wheel 312 to control the feed, and a plate 348 carrying the switches is pivotable about 350 to disengage the switches from the dogs, by a solenoid 368 and levers 352, 358, 366. Tool head 32, Fig. 25, is angularly adjustable about a vertical axis by a worm wheel 388, actuated by a worm 390, Fig. 17. Specification 953,402 is referred to.
