Abstract

Settings; flues, external.-In an expansion joint between a boiler shell and a flue wall, of the kind in which a plate 2, Fig. 1, secured to the boiler shell 1 engages in a packed channel 4 in the flue wall, the channel is formed with a restricted opening 4a in which is placed asbestos rope or other packing 8 to prevent accidental egress of the packing 7 in the channel. The part of the plate inside the channel carries one or more lateral enlargement pieces 6. The brickwork of the flue wall is reinforced by vertical rods passing through elongated holes in the bricks. The joint at the front of a boiler is formed by a pair of part annular plates 14. Fig. 6, engaging in corresponding recesses 13 in the brickwork of the setting. Packing 17 prevents the admission of coal dust &c. to the space between the shell and the brickwork.
