Abstract

Walls.-In order to seal the space allowed for expansion between adjoining furnace walls, particularly those embodying water tubes, blocks are provided which project across the space and are maintained in sliding contact with the furnace walls; an air-tight seal is also provided extending between the tubes of the adjoining walls. As shown in Fig. 2, the furnace walls comprise blocks 7 secured to water-tubes 6 by holding members 9, a space 16 being allowed for expansion between the two walls. The space 16 is closed by blocks 18 which are pressed against the walls at 19 and 20 by springs 21, 22. A casing 24 bolted to members 13 renders the junction of the walls airtight. Modifications of the arrangement of the springs for holding the blocks 18 against the walls and of the air-sealing plates are described and shown.
