Abstract

253,373. Clarke, F. E. L. July 16, 1925. Optical apparatus.-For the detection of cultured pearls and the examination of all kinds of precious stones, a beam of light is projected through the gem from a lamp C housed in a casing A, with the aid of an inclined mirror F and a condenser J. The gem is contained in an apertured tray S in a tank P filled with a liquid of the same refractive index as the gem. Examination of a cultured pearl by means of a beam of light from the lamp c reveals the nucleus readily, and permits the colour also to be ascertained. The use of a blue filter glass facilitates examination of the nucleus. Ventilation of the casing is effected by a sloping top B and an aperture D as shown.
