252,982. Johnson, J. Y., (Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik). Nov. 5, 1925. Ammoniacal liquor, treating.-Caustic alkali or alkali metal carbonate and lime are added to hot tar water prior to cooling and evaporation in a stream of air or other oxygen containing gas, the liquor being used over again for cooling the hot tarry gases obtained by the distillation of bituminous fuel. This prevents the phenolic bodies forming a resinous sludge in the liquor cooling tower. Slaked lime may be added to the tar water prior to its introduction into the cooling tower whereby the alkali metal carbonate formed by the carbon dioxide in the distillation gases is transformed into caustic alkali.
