Abstract

Road-traffic signals on vehicles; semaphore luminous signals.-A signalling device comprise a slotted tube 10 fastened crosswise of the car having two slots 11 each comprising a main por tion running lengthwise of the tube and a short portion at right-angles to the main portion at its outer end. A lamp case 32 is fastened upon each end of the tube and houses an electric lamp 17 enclosed in a rectangular frame containing coloured glasses, the lamp being secured to a roc 15 sliding in the tube 10. The rod 15 is provided with a handle 16 which slides in the slot 11 and with an insulated contact ring 23 connected by a rod 24 to the lamp 17. Electric contacts 25, 26 are connected through a switch to the battery and are adapted to make contact with the ring 23 to light the lamp 17 in its extreme positions. When the lamp 17 is within the case 32 it serves as a sidelight; a red light being shown through the side glass 21. When the lamp is moved out of the casing 32 it shows a white light to the front and a red light to the rear and when the driver moves the handle 16 into the right-angled slot, when turning the vehicle, the lamp 17 is revolved through 90‹ and a green light shows both at the front and rear. The tube 10 may be divided in the centre.
