Abstract
252,393. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Moss, S. A., and Robinson, M. G.). May 23, 1925, [Convention date]. Casings.-The diffuser of a centrifugal pump or compressor consists of two spaced walls 8 which are so shaped that they first approach each other at the part 9 and are afterwards parallel. The gap formed by the parallel walls is continued by the plates 10, and it forms a free vortex chamber, the dimensions of the parts being chosen so that the minimum vortex angle is 20‹, while at normal load the angle is about 35‹. To reduce the diameter of the structure the walls of the plates 10 may recede from each other at the circumference to form the expanding section 11. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the tip of the impeller 12 is narrow and the plates 13, which form the diffuser, are parallel throughout their radial depth; they are so close together that the vortex angle of the fluid is greater than 20‹.
