Abstract

Converting pulsating currents into steady continuous currents.- The filament and plate currents, and grid-biasing potentials, of a multivalve receiving-set are derived from the house mains through a chemical rectifier and smoothing unit capable of being applied directly across either an alternating or direct current supply. Rectifying cells 32 - - 35 comprising aluminium electrodes combined with iron, lead, or platinum electrodes in a borax, or sodium, or ammonium-phosphate electrolyte, are arranged as shown to give full-wave rectification from an AC supply through house-matins 31. The condenser 37 across the rectifying cells is stated to give an increased voltage, whilst chokes 39, 40 and condensers 41, 42 eliminate any hum from the mains. Where the house-mains carry direct current, they may be connected, irrespective of their polarity, across the same terminals as those used for an AC supply.
