Abstract
250,484. Smith, J. L. Nov. 5, 1925. Rolling.-Scale is removed from bars before entering rolls by passing between top and bottom knives 41, Fig. 6 and a pair of edge scraper knives 66, Fig. 2 operated by controlled power, the knife units being supported on one another and secured to the frame of a rolling mill. The bar enters a bell mouth 31 and passes through the bell mouth guide 7 to the rolls connected to pistons 15 in cylinders 14 and are adjusted by fluid pressure valves. The edge scraping knives 66 are connected to pistons 50 working in controlled fluid pressure cylinders 49. The bell mouth 31 is provided with replaceable wear plates. The vertical knife guides are offset so that the top knife is in advance of the lower one. The knives 66 are notched at 68. An additional guiding web such as 22 is interposed between each of the pairs of knives. When the knives are fully retracted they and their carriers may be withdrawn without removing any bolts. Working at specified temperatures.-The use of the above described scale removing means enables the bar to be rolled at a temperature of from 1900‹ to 2000‹ F.
