Abstract

250,303. Viscose Co. Dec. 31, 1924. Addition to 226,808. Reels or bobbins.-Relates to apparatus for use in the washing, dyeing, &c. of artificial silk and other fibrous materials by the method described in the parent Specification according to which the cake of silk is placed over a collapsable rotating carrier, and the liquid is caused to penetrate and pass through the material by the action of centrifugal force alone. According to the present invention, the construction of the carrier is simplified in that the gripping arms 67 are pivoted in flanges 68 carried by the central cylinder 56, and the lower end of this cylinder is slotted to enter castellations 58 on the driving-head 59; the slotted base plate 71 is flanged at its inner edge to engage the flange 68 at the lower end of the cylinder 56, and is there held in place by the parts 74 of the arms 67 which are themselves held in position by washers 70 and pins 69 passed through their ends; collars 78 on the upper ends of the arms 67 prevent the passage of particles of metal &c. from the pivots to the cake of silk: a disc 75 of rubber or similar inert material is preferably secured on the base-plate 71. In the construction just described, the weighted bars used in the apparatus of the parent Specification may be omitted. As a further modification, the carrier on which the silk is washed, &c., may be adapted to act as the bobbin, for which purpose the gripping arms 82, Fig. 4, are constructed to be parallel to the axis of the perforated cylinder 79, and the latter is adapted to be mounted on the driving-spindle 83, driving connection being secured by means of pins 86 carried by a head 85 fast on the spindle and by holes 87 in the base-plate 88 and flange 81, which holes register when the arms are brought to the unturned position, and a second connection may be made at the opposite end of the spindle by means of studs 89 which enter notches 90 in the latter. In a modification of this construction, the pivoted arms are dispensed with, being replaced by a perforated or reticulated cylinder 92, Fig. 6, split longitudinally and mounted between caps 96. 97, a dog 95 on the former serving to move the cylinder distended during winding; the drive is transmitted to the other cap 97 by means of pins 86 which enter recesses in the cap, and from the latter to the winding cylinder 92 by pins 98; alter winding, the cap 96 is removed releasing the cylinder 92, and the latter is then mounted on the coned end of a vertical rotating spindle, for which purpose the cap 97 is provided with a coned seating 104.
