Abstract

226,808. Viscose Co., (Assignees of McKenzie, D. A.). Dec. 28, 1923, [Convention date]. Treating substances with liquids.-Relates to centrifugal apparatus for the washing &c. of cakes of artificial silk or the like In one form, the carrier comprises a number of crank arms 9, Figs. 1 and 2, mounted on a collar 13 and a baseplate 5, both of which snugly fit a perforated cylinder 11 upstanding from and rotating with a hub 25 carried by a spindle 24; the lower projecting ends 8 of the arms 0 enter recesses 7 in the hub 25, and through this connection rotary motion is transmitted to the carrier; and the upper collar 13 is located by an inwardly-tuned lug 32 carried thereby, engaging a recess in the cylinder 11. The arms 9 pass through and are guided by slots 22 in a disc 16 mounted on the base-plate 5 in such a manner that relative rotary motion between the parts is permitted; by rotation of the disc in one direction, the arms 9 are collapsed to allow the cake to be placed in position; rotation in the opposite direction, expands the carrier, causing the arms to grip the cake. On rotation of the carrier as a whole, the inertia of the disc together with the effect of centrifugal force on the arms of the carrier cause these to move outwardly, with the result that the material of the cake is put under tension; and such effect may be made more certain by providing cranked arms 28 weighted at their outer extremities, pivoted in the hub 25, and adapted to engage lugs 30 carried by the disc 16; springs cause the arms to move inwardly when the apparatus is at rest. Liquid is supplied through a central perforated stationary pipe 39, escaping as a series of jets which impinge on the perforated cylinder 11 from which the liquid is projected as a whirling. spray on to the inner face of the material; centrifugal force impels the liquid through the latter, and the liquid is finally collected in a tank in which the carriers are mounted. In another construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8, there are fewer gripping arms 9. and each carries a section 41 of a segmental screen which bears against the inner periphery of the cake of silk; the base-plate 5 and the upper collar 13 are dispensed with, and in place thereof the arms 9 are pivoted in flanges 5<a> and 12a integral with the cylinder 11, and the weighted arms 28 which pass through openings in the depending flange of the disc 16, are also pivoted in the lower flange 5<a>; a projection 54 carried by the hub 25, enters a slot 55 in the cylinder 11 for the purpose of locating the carrier on its spindle. If the inner face of the mass is unprotected, it is preferred to deliver the liquid in form of a spray which may or may not have an initial whirling motion: if, however, a perforated, reticulated, &c. screen is interposed, the liquid may be delivered in jets or in bulk, and it may even flood the interior of the mass.
