Abstract

754,262. Washing dust from gases. OSPELT, G. April 23, 1954 [April 24, 1953 ; July 27, 1953], No. 11800/54. Class 55(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] Apparatus for removing dust from gases comprises a duct for the dust-laden gases in which a disc-shaped brush is adapted to revolve and which extends across the entire free area of the duct and into an annular enlargement of the duct, the arrangement being such that dust particles precipitated on the bristles of the brush are discharged into and removed from the annular enlargement of the duct. The brush may operate dry or wet and jets of oil or water or a gas may be sprayed or directed onto the bristles of the brush, preferably from a position in the centre of the brush. The form of the brush is chosen in relation to the nature of the dust to be removed and the gases from which they are to be removed. Thus the bristles may consist of filaments of textile fibres, synthetic resin fibres, spring steel wires, acid-resistant wires or of a material capable of exerting a physico-chemical influence upon the gas under treatment. The bristles may be straight or of waved form and in the latter case they may be stretched centrifugally when the brush is revolved rapidly. Also the bristles may be set uniformly on the brush or on a screw-shaped plan and they may be secured to give any desired size of space between individual bristles and be arranged to oscillate during operation. Two or more brushes may be arranged in series in a duct and the brushes may be of two or more types. As shown in Fig. 1 a brush 2 is mounted on a spindle 4 of an electric motor 5 arranged within a gas duct 8 and secured thereto by a spider 6. The tips of the bristles of the brush extend into a housing 3 clamped between annular flanges 7 of sections of the gas duct, the housing 3 being provided with a withdrawal conduit 13 for the removal of dust. The conduit 13 leads into a hopper 13b. In modifications a brush or a series of brushes may be mounted in the curved portion of an elbowed conduit. When a series of brushes is provided the brushes may be mounted on a common shaft or to rotate independently of each other.
