Planing.-In a machine for producing tapered work such as switches for railway or tramway rails, the tool-slide g is lowered during the cutting stroke of the work-table b and raised during the idle stroke, or vice versa, 'by means of a rack i adjustably attached to the table and connected through gearing to the screw h which adjusts the tool-slide vertically. More than one tool-slide may be operated in a similar manner. The rack engages a pinion j on a vertical shaft k having spiral or other gears l for rotating a shaft m connected by change-gears o to a shaft q which passes through the cross-slide d and is connected to the screw h by two pairs of bevel gears. The first bevel gear r is loose on the shaft q and may be engaged therewith by a sliding clutch w so that one or more of the tool-slides g may be disconnected at will. The mechanism may be thrown out of gear completely by removing the pinion j. A second rack operating on the opposite side of the pinion j may be provided so as to act when the first rack finishes and thus produce a V-shaped cut.
