150,049. Cowley, H. W., and Cowley, C. H. May 24, 1919. Mortising.-A mortising-machine comprises two or more chain cutters d mounted on one spindle, or a series of such sets operable simultaneously. The cutter spindles are adjustable laterally along a guide e by means of screws f. The work-table g is raised and lowered by pinions h gearing with racks h<1> thereon and connected to the driving-shaft a through toothed wheels h<2>, k. a shaft k<1>, and either a variable-speed beltpulley k<3> or a reversing-pulley n, the shaft k<1> being connected to either of these pulleys by a clutch o. This clutch is operated by a lever p, a rod p<2>, and a lever s adapted to be actuated either by a treadle or by a rod t<1> which is raised by a tappet t<3> carried by the work-table when this reaches a predetermined height. Reversal of the table-operating mechanism is thus produced automatically when a mortice is completed, and then the machine is stopped by a spring-controlled rod p<3> connected to the lever s and to the belt-fork q. The work 2 is arranged on both sides of a fence 1 extending along the table g between the cutters of each pair, and are clamped thereto by pivoted jaws 3 operated simultaneously by left and right hand screws 5 adapted to be turned individually by handles 6 or together by chain-wheels 7 geared together by means of a chain 8. To allow for wood of varying thickness the chain-wheels may have a small travel between collars 10, Fig. 4, on the screws, so that final adjustment may be made by turning the screws individually. According to the first Provisional Specification screw-and-nut or other mechanism may be used for traversing the worktable, or the work may remain stationary while the cutters are fed to it, and a suction or blowing arrangement may be provided to remove the cuttings.
