Abstract
249,566. British Thomson-Houston. Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Seede, J. A.). March 23, 1925, [Convention date]. Electrode furnaces. In a furnace 10 provided with co-operating vertically arranged electrodes 15, 16, the relative positions of which are automatically adjusted, the electrodes are enclosed in a refractory chamber 12 having a cover 13 and the charge is situated in the space between the chamber 12 and the walls of the furnace. The electrode 15 is operated' by automatic gear as described in Specification 179,595, and the position of the arc can be varied by means of a motor 47 controlled by a switch 52 and geared to the electrode 16. The chamber 12 may comprise a graphite or carbon cylinder cemented to the furnace. In producing sodium sulphide the chamber 12 is surrounded by charcoal 53. Raw material 54 charged thereon is melted and trickles down to the tap hole 11.
