Abstract

130,288. Marriott, G. March 3, 1919. Electrode furnaces.-A hearth comprises a layer a of fine dolomite and tar, a covering b of asbestos millboard extending partly up the sides and around the doors and spout, and a copper or bronze plate c with a tail piece extending through the wall to which a supply conductor is connected; the plate c is surrounded by slightly higher magnesite bricks d, and is covered with graphite powder e to the level of the bricks. A single course f of magnesite bricks is built round the sides. Within the shell thus formed is packed a bed g about twelve inches thick composed of dolomite 60 per cent, magnesite 30 per cent, fine metal clippings 8 per cent, graphite 2 per cent, with a binding of tar. Above this is packed a second bed h six inches thick composed of dolomite 60 per cent, magnesite 30 per cent, metal clippings 10 per cent, and tar binding. Above this are sloping sides i composed of dolomite 60 per cent and magnesite 40 per cent. The upper walls are built of silica bricks k, resting on a layer j of fine chrome ore.
