Abstract

123,306. Soc. Electro-Dletallurgique Franþaise. Feb. 11, 1918, [Convention date]. Electrode furnaces.-Connexion is made to the hearth of a crucible by refractory conductors fitting perforations in the hearth and extending below it into powdered heat-insulating material. As shown, the powder 2 separates the carbon or other crucible 3 from an outer casing 1 which may be or ferro-concrete or other material of high compressive strength. Platforms 11 may be made integral with the casing. In a carbide furnace, the powder may be quicklime; in a silicon furnace, it may be infusorial earth or fibrous carborundum. Tapping is effected through openings each flocred by a carbon block 6 and surrounded by a refractory flange 7 to protect the concrete. The base of the crucible consists of one or more main central blocks 4. supported by the walls, and smaller blocks jointed by tar or molasses. In the main blocks 4 fit the graphitized conductors 8, which may be provided within the heat-insulating powder with water-cooled screw terminals 9, The part of the casing through which the conductors pass may be of sheet-metal 10 to allow expansion. The hearth connexion may be omitted. In a two or three phase furnace, conductors inserted in blocks beneath the separate upper electrode may be connected by flexible strips below the casing.
