Abstract

331,353. Jensen, C. A., (American Metal Co., Ltd.). June 7, 1929. Reverberatory furnaces; charging.-In the melting and refining of copper, ingots of the metal are preheated to a temperature somewhat below melting-point, and are then plunged separately into a bath of metal in the melting-furnace. As shown, the ingots in the form of slabs of electrolytically deposited metal are fed by a ram 20 along an inclined flue 24 leading to the melting-hearth 23. the tracks 29 along which the ingots move being raised above the floor of the flue, so that the heating-gases from the melting-hearth have free access around the ingots. The bath of metal is deepest at the feed end so that the ingots are immersed immediately beneath the molten metal and the slag floating thereon. The metal in a superheated state is discharged through a taphole 34 at the shallow end of the bath, and passes to a tilting refining-chamber 16, Fig. 6, in which it i s covered by a layer 36 of deoxidizing slag, and a layer 37 of carbon. The oxide from the metal passes to the slag, and the latter may be main. tained in an active state either chemically by the carbon layer, or electrolytically. Heat may be supplied either by hot gases or electrically, and two refining-chambers may be arranged in series.
