Abstract

278,005. Gustafsson, E. G. T. Sept. 27, 1926, [Convention date]. Furnace details.-A melting furnace employing a slag bath and provided with adjustable electrodes is operated so that the combined arc and slag resistance per electrode is at least 0.02 ohms. The resistance may be increased to 0.06 ohms. Voltages may be increased as the depth of the slag bath increases by varying the transformer ratio. Alternatively continuous or intermittent tapping of slag may be effected. A drop of 110 -220 volts per electrode may be employed. The electrodes may be intermittently immersed if the temperature falls too low. The composition of the charge may be varied to give a conductive slag to enable long arcs to be used. The furnace may be used for producing iron and iron alloys. aluminium or alloys thereof, or zinc. The charge may be in the form of briquettes.
