Abstract

159,195. Akt.-Ges. Brown, Boveri, et Cie. Feb. 18, 1920, [Convention date]. Electrode and resistance furnaces.-A muffle a is situated within a chamber in which arcs are formed between electrodes e and a molten resistance material d. This material may be a substanqe non-conductive when cold. a metal such as iron, or an alloy; if the metal is heated to boiling point an uniform temperature can be obtained. One or more muffles a may be arranged in a single heating-chamber; they may be horizontal or inclined, and fixed or removable. Electrode holders slide on uprights c also supporting the furnace. Various numbers of electrodes may be provided, and may be fed with direct or single or polyphase alternating current. The furnace may be used for burning, melting, hardening, and annealing.
