Abstract

Timing of the ignition in accordance with the engine speed is obtained by means of a centrifugal governor actuating the advance and retard mechanism through a relay device, such as a piston acted on by the pressure of the lubricating-oil as controlled by a valve connected to the governor. Hand control for starting and slow running is also provided, and in engines having both battery and magneto ignition the former is arranged to be advanced, considerably more than the latter by the hand control at starting, both systems being afterwards advanced equal amounts by the governor as described in Specification 247,897. The Figure shows a relay device comprising a piston valve d connected by a rod d<1> and lever a<1> to the governor sleeve a, and admitting oil under pressure from an annular chamber b<5> by way of ports b<1>, c<1>, passage d<3>, and ports c<2> to the underside of a piston c, which through a slide e and lever f actuates the timing-mechanism against the influence of a spring g. The movements of the piston c are limited in proportion to those of the valve d by means of ports c<3>, c<4>, through which oil escapes as soon as the ports c<4> move beyond the end of the valve d.
