Abstract
247,061. Mattes, A. June 5, 1925. Relay or power apparatus-The turntable of a trailer is rotated for steering by power derived from the rotation of the road wheels or other running part. A screw shaft 1 rotates the turntable and is driven by chain gear 22, 20 from a shaft 6 carrying a toothed wheel always in mesh with pinions 15, 18 mounted on arms of a three-armed lever 17 pivoted on the shaft. The pinions 15, 18 can be made to gear respectively with external and internal teeth of a gear wheel 4 fixed to the axle or road wheel. Thus the shaft 6 and therefore the steering shaft 1 can be driven in opposite directions according to which of the pinions is in gear with the wheel 4. The lever 17 carrying the pinions is controlled by a cable 8 passing over pulleys to a convenient place either on the trailer or the tractor vehicle.
