Abstract

246,886. British Cyanides Co., Ltd., Rossiter, E. C., and Cooper, C. H. Sept. 9, 1924. Moulding resins; moulding plaques &c. - Decorated articles are composed of paper, fabric, or like cellulosic material, previously decorated, and formed into a substantially inseparable mass by impregnation with artificial resin and subsequent subjection to heat and pressure. The resins preferred are those formed from formaldehyde and thiourea or urea. Two or more sheets of paper, fabric, &c. so treated may be combined, or the paper &c. may be combined with mouldable material, such as wood meal impregnated with artificial resin. In the manufacture of plates, plaques, saucers, cups, &c. a piece of paper &c. decorated in the manner desired is soaked in artificial resin and placed in a mould, which is then filled with moulding powder comprising artificial resin. The mould is closed and the article cured by pressure and heat. Flat. sheets, tiles, &c. may be made in like manner, both top and bottom sheets of paper &c. being decorated if desired. Instead of mouldable material, a rigid porous material such as woodboard, three-ply wood, &c. soaked in artificial resin may be used. The curing may be effected by hot pressure plates or hot rollers. The heat and pressure may also be applied by passing the paper &c. with or without mouldable material through heated rollers. The paper &c. may be decorated by printing in various designs and colours, or printed calico, chintz, &c. may be used.
