Abstract
<PICT:0807090/III/1> A process for the manufacture of laminates having a lignin-cellulose containing carrier plate, e.g. of wood, veneer or hard fibre, of predetermined moisture content and a thermosetting resin layer comprises heating and simultaneously compressing the carrier plate and its resin layer, the moisture content of the carrier plate being maintained at a predetermined value by heating the press platen which is in contact with the synthetic resin layer to be hardened while the carrier plate is maintained at a substantially lower temperature. The synthetic resin may be a phenolic urea or a melamine resin and may be applied by spraying or may be applied as a film having organic or inorganic fibres, preferably dyed or printed, as a carrier and impregnated with the synthetic resin. The term "lignin cellulose" relates to a wood material encrusted with lignin. Moisture may be added to the plate during the hot pressing process by providing an intermediate layer having an excess of moisture between the rear surface of the plate and the press platen. The carrier plate is maintained at a substantially lower temperature during the pressing process by cooling the press platen adjacent the rear surface of the carrier plate or at least maintaining it at a substantially lower temperature than that of the heated platen in contact with the resin layer. The Figure shows a portion of a multi-platen press having platens a and a1 capable of being heated or cooled, between which are disposed lignin-cellulose-containing carrier plates b, synthetic resin layers c, polished sheets d to produce a high gloss on the resin surface and intermediate layers e which may be of moist fibrous material if it is desired to increase the moisture content of the plates b or of water impervious material such as rubber if it is desired to maintain the moisture content of the plates b at substantially the same value. In carrying out the process the press platens a are at first heated, and the platens a1 are either cooled or maintained at a substantially lower temperature than the platens a. When the resin layers c have hardened the temperature of the platens a may be lowered.
