Abstract

1,214,988. Moulding decorated articles. BRITISH INDUSTRIAL PLASTICS Ltd. 19 Dec., 1968 [27 Sept., 1967], No. 43969/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B6] A decorated article is produced by (a) shaping and partly curing a thermosetting synthetic resin composition, (b) applying to the part cured article a decorative sheet and a layer of particulate thermosetting resin so that the sheet is sandwiched between the article and particulate resin and (c) applying heat and pressure to the assembly to render the particulate resin mobile so that it spreads over the sheet to form a continuous layer and impregnate the sheet and to cure both the resins to a fully thermoset state. The decorative sheet may be paper or a textile material and may be coloured or have a pattern printed on it. It may be transparent or opaque and may be impregnated with resin before use. Preferred materials are α-cellulose and rayon. The moulded resin is preferably melamine-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde or phenol-formaldehyde and the particulate resin melamineformaldehyde cyclohexylguanamine-formaldehyde, acetoguanamine-formaldehyde or benzoguanamine-formaldehyde. The shaping is preferably carried out in a compression mould, which is closed slowly after the decorative sheet has been inserted to prevent damage to it.
