Abstract

Prints are applied to the surface of thermoplastic or thermosetting plastics by means of a transfer comprising a fibrous free carrier bearing the print, the transfer of the print being effected while the surface of the plastic is in a hot and soft condition. The transfer carrier may be aluminium or other metal foil, cellulose foil or paper coated with a non-thermoplastic material, and the print may be made thereon in a thermoplastic ink, or, if the carrier is first coated with a transparent thermoplastic layer, the print may be made with ordinary printing ink. The transfer may be effected during the moulding of the article, the carrier being afterwards removed. In the case of thermosetting plastics the transfer is effected at a stage in the moulding operation before the plastic is finally cured. The transfer may be laid in the mould and the plastic material moulded thereon.
