Abstract

Plastic mouldings are partially plated by (a) covering the desired parts of the surface of plastic mouldings which are made of a material easily attacked by an etching soln., with a cover layer consisting of a synthetic resin which is attacked to a less extent by the etching soln. than the plastic material; (b) immersing the mouldings in the etching soln., (c) chemically plating the surface, and (d) electroplating the surface. Plated plastic articles with coloured marks, designs and patterns are produced. The coloured parts are firmly bonded to the surface of the plastic article and have a high durability. Transparent cover layers can also be applied to the surface of mouldings also consisting of a transparent plastic, to give plated articles which locally transmit light.
