Abstract

A process for producing a decorative, advertising or display panel consists in forming a die with a design thereon in relief or intaglio, transferring the design reversed to thermo-setting plastic material, and using the negative thus produced as a mould or as an impressing or embossing die for reproducing the design. The design may be thus reproduced in plaster of Paris, clay, powdered resin or resin solution plus siliceous material (by using the negative as a mould) or in papier mach<\>ae, leather, plastic wood, resin-impregnated paper or fabrics (by using the negative as an embossing die). The die may be of hard steel formed from an original drawing by photo engraving, and the negative may be produced therefrom by setting the die in a frame and pouring over it partly-cured semi-liquid phenol-formaldehyde condensate or heat-hardening glue and heating the latter, with pressure if necessary. The hard steel die may be covered with chromium when urea compounds are used, to prevent chemical interaction. The reproduced design may be coated or filled with clay, enamel or paint. The original metal die and the negative produced therefrom can be used in combination to impress the design on thin material, if thin material or an oil film is interposed between the die and negative when the latter is being made.
