Abstract
246,802. Renault, L. Jan. 29, 1925, [Convention date]. Preventing escape of oil from cam -shaft casings; force-feed lubricating.-Escape of oil through the joints and openings of the cam-shaft casing 4 of an internal-combustion engine having overhead valve-gear is prevented by the provision of a turbine pump 11, Fig. 4, driven by the camshaft 5 and creating a partial vacuum inside the casing 4. The pump 11 may be keyed on the shaft 5 or may be driven at an increased speed through a gear train 16, 17, 19, 20. Oil and air sucked from the casing 4 by the pump is discharged into the crank case through a channel 22. Oil is supplied from the crank case by a pump through pipes 3, 28, Fig. 5, to the interior of the shaft 5 at the other end, whence it passes through holes 30 to lubricate the mechanism. Surplus oil is withdrawn by a turbine pump 23 mounted at the end of the shaft and is discharged into the crank case through a pipe 27 surrounding the pipe 3.
