Actuating-mechanism.-The valves closing the outlets at the bottom of a vehicle tank are operated by a control rod extending along the tank with means at the rear end for imparting a longitudinal movement to the rod whereby the valves are held open and means at the forward end for giving a rotary movement to the rod which is released from the rear holding means to permit the valves to close. The valves 5 controlling the outlets 3 of separate compartments 2 of the tank 1 are opened by a handle 16, situated in the bucket box 15 at the rear end, and adapted to be tilted to engage a shoulder 17 and so held in position, which carries a crank 19 connected to a sleeve clutch member 21 having keyways 22, Fig. 2, therein and a chamber 23 to accommodate a pin 24 on the control rod 12 which actuates the valves 5 by means of collars 13 coacting with bell crank levers 10 lifting the valve rods 6. To release the rod 12 and allow the valves to close the rod is turned so that the pin 24 slides in the clutch keyways 22 by means of a bearing member 28, Fig. 3, having a keyway 27 in which slides a pin 26 at the front end of the rod 12. The bearing member 28 is rotated against the action of a spring 37 by a hand rod 35 to a position determined by a stop 39 so that the pin 24 at the rear end registers with the keyways 22 of the sleeve clutch whereupon the valves close under the action of their springs and move the rod 12 forward against the action of a spring 40 to prevent shock.
