Abstract
245,753. Siemens & Halske Akt.-Ges. Jan. 9, 1925, [Convention datel. Cementation.-In a method of increasing the ohmic resistance of bodies of pure iron, especially electrolytic iron, especially when in the form of sheets of any thickness by adding foreign substances to the iron, silicon or boron or a compound of these substances is brought into contact with the iron and by use of an increased temperature the silicon &c. is deposited thereon, the treated body then being subjected to a higher temperature, preferably at a high vacuum, to cause the coating to adhere firmly thereto. The coated iron may be subjected to a higher temperature in a vacuum, whereby the silicon or boron is incorporated into the iron. A coating of silicon or an iron sheet may be produced by passing a current of silicon hydride over the sheet at a raised temperature. In an example, a dynamo plate is placed in a tube of refractory material and the air removed therefrom by a current of hydrogen. When the air has been removed completely, the tube is heated to a temperature of 600-700‹ C. and silicon hydride is passed into the tube. Part of the latter gas is dissociated into silicon and hydrogen, the silicon being deposited on the sheet. To increase the adherence of the coating, the supply of silicon hydride is cut off, the temperature raised to 1000‹ C. and a current of hydrogen passed through the tube. The process may be repeated one or several times. In a modification, the coating is produced by embedding the iron in finely-powdered silicon or ferro-silicon and subjecting the same to a tempering process.
