Low - pressure metallicvapour apparatus. - A mercury-vapour or like rectifier comprises a number of evacuated envelopes 1, 2, each containing an anode 4 or 6 and a cathode 5 or 7, and connected by a tube 3 adjacent to the cathodes 5, 7. For a 15-ampere rectifier, the tube may be 4 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. At the beginning of each alternation the arc stream between the new anode and the more remote cathode passes close to the nearer cathode and renders it active. The transfer of the arc to the nearer cathode may be facilitated by providing resistances 8, 9 connected as shown.
