Actuating-mechanism.-A screw-down valve or similar device having alternative rapid and slow movements has the nut supported in a bridge member A, as shown, carried by toggle levers B, C, B', C<1>. In normal use the spindle H has a slow movement by rotation of the nut by the hand-wheel K. For rapid movement, a pull on the lever F, by reason of the gearing E, E', bends outwards the centres of the toggles, and allows the, upper portions to collapse, thus closing the valve quickly. The reverse movement opens the valve quickly.
