Abstract

238,854. Cross, W. M. Aug. 20, 1924, [Convention date]. Casings.-A high-pressure steam turbine provided with a reinforcing shell, preferably of forged steel, fitting over the casing, has pressuretight end plates carrying the rotor bearings. The invention is shown applied to a turbine of Parsons type having three stages, and comprising a rotor drum 5 carrying vanes 6 and mounted on a shaft 4, a casing 8 divided longitudinally into halves, and carrying fixed vanes 7. The reinforcing shell 1 fits over the casing 8, and is provided with end plates 2, 3 in which shaft 4 is journaled. The shell may be secured in place by a key 9, or by the wedging action of internally tapered portions engaging corresponding shoulders of the different stages. The end plates 2, 3 are respectively provided with supply channel 10 and exhaust channel 12.
