Abstract

Braking.-The frictional drag of the rotary parts on the shoes of the transmission brake of a motor - vehicle is utilized to apply the brakes on the front wheels thereof. The shoes 6 of the transmission brake are pivoted at 7 on an arm 11 freely mounted on a bearing coaxial with the transmission shaft and are adapted to be expanded to engage the brake drum by a cam 15 integral with a toothed sector 16 and also pivoted on the arm 11. A toothed sector 19, mounted on a shaft passing through the gear box or on a lever pivoted on a spindle mounted thereon, is adapted to operate the cam through a spur wheel 17 freely mounted on the hub of the arm 11, and the sector 16. A support or socket 21 on the cam spindle is connected by suitable linkage to the front wheel brakes. When the cam 15 is rocked to expand the shoes 6, the movement of the member 21 is transmitted to the front wheel brakes, the application of which is completed by the movement of the shoes 6, arm 11, cam 15 and socket 21 with the brake drum.
