Abstract

189,947. Rouvier, A. E. Oct. 25,1921. Brakes; relay or power apparatus. - Power for applying the brakes of a motor vehicle is obtained from the motor through a differential gear. According to Fig. 1 the casing 8 which carries the planet pinions 9 of a differential gear is driven from the changespeed gear spindle 1. A lever arm 13 connected to the vehicle brakes and a brake drum 15 are mounted respectively upon a shaft 12 and a sleeve 14, each connected to one of the planet pinions 10, 11. The drum 15 is adapted to be braked by the driver as by means of a pair of shoes 16, 17, Fig. 2, with blocks 21, 22 engaged by cams 23, 24 on an operating shaft 25. Normally the shaft 12 remains stationary and the brake shoes 16, 17 being released, the sleeve 14, pinions 9 and casing 8 are running with the motor. To apply the brakes, the driver engages the shoes 16, 17 with the drum 15 thus causing the pinions 9 to turn the pinion 10 and shaft 12 until the vehicle brakes are applied. In a modification, the differential gear is arranged within the intermediate spindle of the change-speed gear.
