Abstract
237,781. Coward, C. Nov. 24, 1924. Windscreens.-Relates to windscreens, particularly for the rear seats of motor-vehicles, of the kind in which the screen is supported at each side of the vehicle by means of a self-locking linkage comprising two parallel arms 9, 11 pivoted to the back of the front seat or a similar support, and a third arm 10 pivoted to each of the arms 9, 11. According to the invention, the screen is mounted upon pillars 1 on a two-armed lever pivoted at 13 to the arm 10 and having one arm 15 pivoted to a link 18 connected to a second lever 16, which is in turn pivoted on the lower arm 11 and has a notch adapted to engage a stud 17 on the upper arm 9. In the erected position of the screen, the rear end of the lower arm 11 abuts against the under side of the upper arm 9, and the series of pivots 13, 15<1>, 16<1> and 9', 12, 8<1> are arranged in toggle formation. the toggles being broken and the notched lever 16 being disengaged from the stud 17 by folding the screen and pillars 1 forwardly as shown in Fig. 2, the screen finally assuming a substantially vertical folded position in advance of the folded linkage. In order to permit of lateral displacement of the screen, the latter is revolubly mounted on the pillars 1, and the arms 9, 11 are attached to lugs 7, 8 on a socket 3 revoluble on the main support 4. Sidescreens may also be pivoted on the pillars 1 and formed at their lower corners with segmental projections 21, which can be turned until they engage projections 22 on the arms 10 and thus lock the screen in its erected position so that the linkage cannot be folded until the side-screens have themselves been folded on to the main screen.
