Abstract
237,220. Bethlehem Steel Co., (Assignees of Essen, P. D. van, and Froelich, C. H.). July 18, 1924, [Convention date]. Ordnance breech mechanism; chambers design.-Breech mechanism for trench mortars and the like comprises a pivotally mounted screw breech-block formed with a combustion chamber having restricted lateral orifices communicating with the barrel bore, the block having a sliding closure at the rear for the insertion of the charge. As shown, a screw breech-block 15 mounted in a swinging carrier ring 14 is bored to receive an explosion chamber 30 closed at the front and having apertures 35 leading to the barrel bore through the annular clearance 34. The rear of the breech-block is bored to form a cartridge chamber 18 adapted to be closed by a laterally sliding block 40 which is operated when the screw breech-block is rotated bv its hand-lever 58. The sliding block carries firing mechanism. A pivoted extractor 50, Fig. 5, has a tail portion 54 adapted to be struck by the side of a spring plunger 57 when the sliding block is moved to the open position. An obturating ring 60 is provided at the front of the breech-screw 15.
