Producers.-In water-gas producers having a jacket boiler as described in Specification 25684/11, the " blow " gas is passed through an external pipe into a heating-jacket surrounding the boiler either directly or after passage through a separate combustion chamber. The producer a is connected by a pipe e with the secondary combustion chamber or superheater g which is connected by a pipe h with the heating-jacket b ; valves i are provided to enable the direction of flow of the gas to be controlled. During the " run," water gas passes directly from the producer to the jacket b when steam is superheated in the chamber g; or the water gas may pass through the chamber g to transfer surplus heat to the jacket. To increase the heating surface of the boiler c, Fig. 2, watertubes r of vertical, inclined, or spiral form may be arranged within the heating-jacket b. In a modification, the heating-jacket also as a combustion chamber for the " blow " gas, in order to dispense with a separate superheater.
