Abstract

231,826. Savage, J. C. April 3, 1924, [Convention date]. Smoke-producing weapons.-Coloured smoke for sky-writing is produced from material which requires to be heated by the engine exhaust gases or by steam or the like, but is such that none of the colouring material is wasted by combustion. The resulting smoke comprises a base smoke coloured by fine particles into which the vaporized colouring material condenses on discharge into the atmosphere. A material for producing red smoke comprises 10 lbs. of orange oil soluble aniline dye, 1 gal. of light mineral lubricating oil, and 1 pint of tetrachlorethane or carbon tetrachloride; the oil provides the base smoke and the dye provides the red colour. For green smoke the orange oil soluble aniline dye is mixed with synthetic indigo, the other ingredients remaining as before. Iodine is included for purple smoke. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of anthracene instead of aniline dye for the production of black or dark grey smoke. It also refers to the use of lactose and potassium chlorate as undesirable. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
