Abstract

204,393. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (American Cotton Oil Co.). June 27, 1922. Pigments.-A black pigment is produced by burning or carbonizing, preferably in an open pan, fuller's earth containing vegetable oil. Fuller's earth which has been used for refining vegetable oil is preferably used, and the heating is continued until the mass burns quietly. The carbon formed in the carbonizing operation may be collected and utilized separately or mixed with the pigment. The product is ground, and may be mixed with other pigments of fillers and a vehicle such as linseed oil with or without driers, to form a paint, or for making printers' ink or shoe polish, and mav be compounded with rubber with or without other pigments, fillers and vulcanizing agents.
