Abstract

230,979. Cavill, H. J. Feb. 28, 1924. Rafts.-A raft designed to be carried by a ship for life-saving purposes comprises an outer annulus 18, Fig. 9, of substantially triangular cross-section. Supported concentrically relatively to the outer annulus, by means of guides 4 and cages 3 which permit a limited axial movement, is a flat buoyant cylinder 13 the ends 12 of which form decks. Rafts of this character are normally stowed on deck in a vertical position and when required are launched by being rolled along the rim 17, this rotation being ensured when the raft arrives at an inclined launching way 9, Fig. 6, by means of a painter 6 one end of which is fastened to a support 7 whilst the other end is wound about the annulus 18. When the raft is water borne, it falls to one side with one or the other of the decks 12 uppermost. The drum 13 is compartmented and the outer annulus may contain buoyant elements 20.
